Marla is the entrepreneur and self-proclaimed cosmetics junkie behind bluemercury, one of the nations fastest growing luxury apothecary and spa chains. Read on to hear what our own Marc and Jennifer learned from Marla about starting a business, finding success, and what to get your valentineTLC What were you doing before bluemercury?MMB I started out as a consultant at McKinsey Company, straight out of undergrad and, after doing that for a couple years, decided to go back to business school. After business school I had the opportunity with a DC-based investor and entrepreneur I joined his team as VP, Strategy and Ops. When he decided to retire, rather than look for a job, I decided to start my own company.Id always been a skin-care junkie so I started bluemercury, a retailer of luxury cosmetics and spa services. I was and am truly passionate about the products. When I started the company, it was with a spa and retail cosmetics store in Georgetown. We now have 12 locations, and are scaling to 25 at the end of this year, and 45 at the end of next. Obviously, were in super growth mode and looking for qualified staff.TLC How did you end up with bluemercur y doing high-end womens cosmetics?MMB Ive always loved cosmetics and its a huge industry. Up until very recently, cosmetics didnt have many channels of distribution. It was mainly department stores and shopping in a department store can be an uncomfortable process, because the stores are set up brand by brand, not by type or product. Our staff at bluemercury are trained in all brands, so we look at it from a true customer perspective. This is a revolutionary change in the industry - products are now sold based on what the customer wants, not brand.TLC Your brand is very exclusive and high-end, but also based on personal recommendations. How do you select the products your feature?MMB Most of the brands we work with have entrepreneurs behind them. For example, Laura Mercier, who was painter in Paris, experimenting with painting faces and decided that she didnt like the current makeup. So, she created her own line The brands we work with are smaller and have real people behind them.TL C Did your time at McKinsey and a successful investment company prepare you for the role of an entrepreneur?MMB Working at McKinsey gives you key analytical skills, such as how to model cash flow and project out your companys revenue given different strategies. When you first start a company you dont have a lot of extra people around to do those sorts of things Also, because bluemercury is dealing with a lot of industry change, the strategy planning helped. The other thing I learned at McKinsey was how to manage projects. Especially with bluemercurys growth, project management is a huge skill we require in all employees, regardless of job title. What McKinsey and professional services dont teach you are the day-to-day nuts and bolts of running a business. For this, I really needed to leverage the experience and knowledge of other entrepreneurs.TLC You actually started off online, then moved to brick and mortar?MMB We realized pretty quickly that, in our industry, to be successful onl ine you needed tremendous scale and a way to attract people to website. While our competitors could raise $10 million dollars for advertising, bricks and mortar was an inexpensive way for us to get traction. The sale of skin products, makeup, and hair care is also very touchy-feely. People want to see and feel the products before they make the first purchase. The category leant itself to retail.TLC Valentines Day is next week - what should our audience be thinking for gifts as they look at bluemercury?MMB Think about what the person theyre buying for is like. If someone loves baths, we recommend the Fresh baths. Who doesnt need a break in their life these days? If youre buying for someone hip and edgy, bliss is a spa in NYC that does fantastic product development - like the lemon and sage body cre8me. We also have Molton Brown, which is a great gift line. They have a black pepper body wash thats beautiful, and a shaving cream thats phenomenal. We also do heavy-duty gift consulting on our 1-800 number on the website.TLC Who are you hiring this year at the $100k+ level and what kind of people do you look for to work for you?MMB One position were focusing on this year is a VP of Marketing, with direct mail and database management experience. Well also be looking for a VP of Construction to help us construct new stores and manage the process from start to finish. Theres also a CIO - were looking for a lot of positions elend just yet, but by end of year, well be actively trying to fill them. Were looking for people that are entrepreneurial and hard-working, with a high energy level. A passion for the products also helps to make it fun. If you have an affinity for it, youll quickly ?get? it. Were also looking for great project managers, people who have experience taking something from start to finish. This is not a company full of meetings and committees, were a company full of entrepreneurs.TLC Thats great stuff. What advice would you have for our readers on achi eving their own success in life and finding their perfect role?MMB They have to find an industry that they love first and foremost, even before job function. Some people say its the other way around, but that wasnt the case for me. I found an industry I adore and laugh because I dont feel like Im going to work. Also, be an expert at something, whatever that is. If youre interviewing for a job, show that youve been an expert at it already. And it doesnt happen overnight, you build that expertise over time. This is true for individuals and companies - bluemercury tries to be an expert at giving skin care and personal care advice, and thats how we view our company. Thanks Marla

The Draft and Selective Service

The Draft and Selective tafelgeschirrThe Draft and Selective tafelgeschirrFor more than 50 years, Selective Service (the Draft) and the registration requirement for Americas young men have served as a backup system to provide manpower to the U.S. Armed Forces. However, in 2016, the Senate proposeda Bill to allow women to register for the draft.Congress actually shelved the idea and the likelihood of it becoming law is extremely low as there are many differing opinions on the Draft altogether for military service. The United States has not used the draft since 1973 and there is a debate to completely do away with the law. Some History on the Draft President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which created the countrys first peacetime draft and formally established theSelective Service Systemas an independent Federal agency within the Department of Defense. From 1948 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means. A lottery drawing - the first since 1942 - welches held on December 1, 1969, at Selective Service National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This event determined the order of call for induction during the calendar year 1970, that is, for registrants born between January 1, 1944, and December 31, 1950. Re-institution of the lottery was a change from the oldest first method, which had been the determining method for deciding the order of call. 366 blue plastic capsules containing birth dates were placed in a large glass jar and drawn by hand to assign order-of-call numbers to all men within the 18-26 age range specified in Selective Service law. With radio, film and TV coverage, the capsules were drawn from the jar, opened, and the dates inside posted in order. The first capsule - drawn by Congressman Alexander Pirine (R-NY) of the House Armed Services Committee - contained the date September 14, so all men born on September 14 in any year between 1944 and 1950 were assigned lottery number 1. The drawing continued until all days of the year had been matched to lottery numbers. In 1973, the draft ended and the U.S. converted to an All-Volunteer military. The registration requirement was suspended in April 1975. It was resumed again in 1980 by President Carter in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis How the Draft has Changed Since Vietnam If a draft were held today, it would be dramatically different from the one held during the Vietnam War. A series of reforms during the latter part of the Vietnam conflict changed the way the draft operated to make it more fair and equitable. If a draft were held today, there would be fewer reasons to excuse a man from service. Before Congress made improvements to the draft in 1971, a man could qualify for a student d eferment if he could show he was a full-time student making satisfactory progress toward a degree. Under the current draft law, a college student can have his induction postponed only until the end of the current semester. A senior can be postponed until the end of the academic year. A draft held today would use a lottery to determine the order of call. Before the lottery was implemented in the latter part of the Vietnam conflict, Local Boards called men classified 1-A, 18 1/2 through 25 years old, oldest first. This resulted in uncertainty for the potential draftees during the entire time they were within the draft-eligible age group. A draft held today would use a lottery system under which a man would spend only one year in first priority for the draft - either the calendar year he turned 20 or the year his deferment ended. Each year after that, he would be placed in a lower priority group and his liability for the draft would lessen accordingly. In this way, he would be spared the uncertainty of waiting until his 26th birthday to be certain he would not be drafted. Based on its evaluation of the costs and capabilities of theSelective Service Systemin the modern warfare environment, theGovernment Accountability Office(GAO) hasrecommendedthat theU.S. Department of Defense(DOD) reevaluate its need for the Selective Service System.

Research Asian Americans least likely to be promoted in tech

Research Asian Americans least likely to be promoted in techResearch Asian Americans least likely to be promoted in techIn Silicon Valley, your ability to get the job does not necessarily mean youll be able to move up the ranks. This is the key finding an Ascendreport highlighted by a new Harvard Business Review article found. According to Equal Opportunity Commission data analyzed by Ascend, Asian Americans were the least likely among all races to become managers and executives in Silicon Valley, even though they were the most likely racial group to get hired for these tech jobs.Despite being outnumbered by Asian men and women in the entry-level professional workforce, white men and women were twice as likely as Asians to become executives and held almost three times the number of executive jobs, the report co-authored by Buck Gee and Denise Peck, states. There is a lack of Asian American representation in top managementAsian American workers are being successfully recruited into the tech sector. According to the Ascend report, they held 47% of Silicon Valley individual professional roles in 2015, compared to 43% of white people in those roles. But the success in hiring did not translate to a success rate in promoting these workers up the corporate ladder. They only held 25% of tech executive positions, compared with nearly 70% held by white people, the report found. The lack of Asian American leadership is not just limited to technology. It is seen across the corporate sector. Last year, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that Asian Americans make up less than 15% of upper management at four of the biggest U.S. banks. Why is there a dropoff between hiring and promotion? Gee and Peck argue that diversity programs focus on hiring over nurturing the leadership talent of Asian American workers. They may be more likely than other groups to get into the room, but they are less likely to be leading the discussion as an executive.Asian Americans are12% of the professional workforcewhile making up only 5.6% of the U.S. population,Gee and Peck wrote in HBR. Because Asian Americans are not considered an underrepresented minority, they are given little priority or attention in diversity programs. We have found that in many companies throughout the country, Asian-related programs are geared toward cultural inclusion, not management diversity.

46% of Americans think they wont have enough for retirement

46% of Americans think they wont have enough for retirement46% of Americans think they wont have enough for retirementWe know that retirees have a habit of moving to certain cities and statesto make their money go further, but recent research shows that people who havent yet reached their Golden Years think theyll have a tough time financially during that chapter in their lives.A Gallup poll found that 46% of Americans who havent retired yet think they wont have enough money when the eventually do.Here are some of the results that stood out. This is how non-retirees think theyll fare in retirementAmong those who havent reached this stage of life yet, the results were almost evenly divided. So even though 46% of respondents in 2018 said they dont think theyll have enough cash for a comfortable lifestyle at that point, 51% are optimistic that they will.Things have changed since 2002, when Gallup found that 32% of people didnt think they would have enough, compared to 59% who thought the y would.Retirees finances, by income levelThis group was asked if they have enough money to live comfortably. Here are the results, based on respondents income levels.Among those making less than $30,000, 45% said yes, while 54% said no. For those making $30,000 to below $75,000, 83% said yes, while 17% said no. Among people making a $75,000 and up, 98% said yes, while 2% said no.Retirees vs. non-retireesThe research found that in 2018, among those who have already retired, 78% say they have enough to live comfortably. But among people who havent done so, 51% predict that they will have enough.Back in 2002, the numbers were different 81% of retirees said they had enough money, while 59% of non-retirees said they expected to.Gallup went on to shed light on a potential bright spot. The future of ones retirement is to some degree unknowable, of course. It may be that 15 or 20 years from now, retirees will elend be as well off as current retirees. This would be the case if, for example, the Social Security system was to have major problems, or if the nations or the worlds economy was in in a major recession, the site reported. But over seven in 10 retirees have reported over the past 1 decades that they have enough money to live comfortably. This, compared with the significantly lower percentages of those who are not retired who think they will have enough money, suggests that retirement may not be as challenging as Americans think.People have widely varying expectations for their financial futures during their Golden Years, but its impossible to predict how things will turn out.
