Youve got youranswer. But did you just want trivia? Or do you actuallywant to get happier? The internet has become a firehose of ideas we never implement, tricks we forget to use.Reading a list of things is easy. Implementing them in your life can be hard. But it doesnt have to be. Lets get down to business.Happiness SubscriptionsHeres an interesting fact about happiness frequency beats intensity. Whats that mean?Lots of little good things make you happier than a handful of big things.Research shows that going to church and exercising both bring people a disproportionate amount of happiness. Why?They give us frequent, regular boosts.Stanford professor Jennifer Aaker says its really that simple the things that make yo u happy, do them more often. We have designated work hours. We schedule doctor appointments. Heck, we even schedule hair appointments. We say happiness is the fruchtwein important thing but fail to consistentlyinclude it in our calendars.Research shows 40% of happiness is due to intentional activity. You can change your happiness by up to 40% by what you choose to do every day.And muchof what you do, you do on autopilot. 40% of what you do every day isnt the result ofdecisions, its due tohabits.ViaThe Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessOne paper published by a Duke University researcher in 2006 found thatmore than 40 percent of the actions people performed each day werent actual decisions, but habits.See where Im going with this?Happy thingsneed to be a habit. Part of your routine. Part of your schedule.Stop waiting forrandom happy events, you need a happiness subscription. So how do we take that list and make them thingswe actually do every day instead of more for gotten trivia?Lets get started.Wake up and say ARGEven scientific happiness advice is often corny. Ill say that now so we can get it off the table. But it works. And this is why you might want to say ARG when you wake up. Its an acronym that stands forAnticipationRecollectionGratitudeIve written about the importance of a morning ritual and how research shows your mood in the morning affects your entire day. So start right.Anticipation is a powerful happiness booster. Its twofor the price of one you get the good thing and you get happy in anticipation of the good thing. So think about what youre looking forward to. Got elendhing youre looking forward to? Schedule something.Recollectinggreat moments has a relatedeffect. Memories allow us to relive the good times and kill stress.ViaThe How of HappinessPeople prone to joyful anticipation, skilled at obtaining pleasure from looking forward and imagining future happy events, are especially likely to be optimistic and to experience intense e motions. In contrast, those proficient at reminiscing about the past- looking back on happy times, rekindling joy from happy memories- are best able to buffer stress. And gratitude is arguably the king of happiness. Whats the research say? Cant be more clear than thisthe more a person is inclined to gratitude, the less likely he or she is to be depressed, anxious, lonely, envious, or neurotic. And the combo often leads to optimism. Another powerful predictor of happiness. So, corny as it may be, wake up and say ARG And then do a quick bit of anticipation, recollection and gratitude.(For more on optimism click here.)All thats fine and dandy. But what do you do once youre out of bed?Savor your morning coffeeTake a moment and really enjoy it. Smell it. Taste it. Appreciate it. Corny? Maybe. But other research shows savoring - appreciating the goodmoments - iswhat separates the happiest people from the average Joe.I imagine some of you are saying, Well, I dont drink coffee. And please imagi ne me saying, Thats not the point. It can be anything you do every morning. And embedding savoring in our little daily rituals is powerful because studies show rituals matter.Heres Harvard professor Francesca GinoYou can think about rituals that you yourself might engage in prior to consumption experiences. What they do, they make us a little bit more mindful about the consumption experience that we are about to have. Because of that, we end up savoring the food or whatever we are drinking more, we enjoy the experience more, and in fact, were also more willing to pay higher prices for whatever it is that we just consumed. Once again, rituals are beneficial in the sense that they create higher levels of enjoyment in the experience that we just had.(For more on how savoring can make you happier click here.)So what other habit can we build into our schedule that boosts joy? How about one that can make you as happy as sex does?Sweat your way to joyWhen you study people to see what makes t hem happiest you get three answers sex, socializing and exercise.ViaEngineering Happiness A New Approach for Building a Joyful LifeTheir findings confirm what had been found previouslyhappiness is high during sex, exercise, or socializing, or while the mind is focused on the here and now, and low during commuting or while the mind is wandering.People who exercise are, across the board, mentally healthier less depression, anger, stress, and distrust.ViaSpark The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the BrainA massive Dutch study of 19,288 twins and their families published in2006 showed that exercisers are less anxious, less depressed, less neurotic, and also more socially outgoing. A Finnish study of 3,403 people in 1999 showed that those who exercise at least two to three times a week experience significantly less depression, anger, stress, and cynical distrust than those who exercise less or not at all.Dont like exercise? Then youre doing the wrong kind.Running, lifting weigh ts, playing any sport Find something you enjoy that gets you moving.(For more on how sweating can increase smiling - and make you smarter too - click here.)Okay, time to head to work. Whats the best thing to do when you start the day? Its not about you - but it will make you happier. The five-minute favorWho lives to a ripe old age? Not those who get the fruchtwein help, ironically its those who give the fruchtwein help.ViaThe Longevity Project Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark Eight-Decade StudyWe figured that if a Terman participant sincerely felt that he or she had friends and relatives to count on when having a hard time then that person would be healthier. Those who felt very loved and cared for, we predicted, would live the longest. Surprise our prediction was wrong. . . Beyond social network size, the clearest benefit of social relationships came from helping others. Those who helped their friends and neighbors, advising and caring for others , tended to live to old age.And a great way to do that without taking up too much time is Adam Rifkins 5 Minute FavorEvery day, do something selfless for someone else that takes under five minutes. The essence of this thing you do should be that it makes a big difference to the person receiving the gift.Usually these favors take the form of an introduction, reference, feedback, or broadcast on social media. So take five minutes to do something that is minor for you but would provide a big benefit to someone else. Its good karma - and science shows that, in some ways, karma is quite real.Yes, some who do a lot for others get taken advantage of. But as Adam Grant of Wharton has shown, givers also succeed moreThen I looked at the other end of the spectrum and said if Givers are at the bottom, whos at the top? The people who consistently are looking for ways to help others are over-represented not only at the bottom, but also at the top of fruchtwein success metrics.(For more on the best way to get happier by being a giver, click here.)Alright, you have to start work for the day. Ugh. But there are ways that work can make you happier too.Life is agame, and so is workLike the research shows, the happiest people have goals.ViaEngineering Happiness A New Approach for Building a Joyful LifeIn his studies, the psychologist Jonathan Freedman claimed thatpeople with the ability to set objectives for themselves- both short-term and long-term- are happier. The University of Wisconsin neuroscientist Richard Davidson has found that working hard toward a goal and making progress to the point of expecting a goal to be realized dont just activate positive feelings- they also suppress negative emotions such as fear and depression. Many of us feel like work can be boring or annoying but the research shows many of us are actually happier at work than at home. Why?Challenges. And we reach that state of flow only when a challenge presents itself. So how can work make us happier?Three research-backed things to tryTo the degree you can, do things youregood at. Were happier when we exercise our strengths.Make note of your progress. Absurd. One study says that as much as70% of happiness comes from your relationships with other people.ViaThe 100 Simple Secrets of Happy PeopleContrary to the belief that happiness is hard to explain, or that it depends on having great wealth, researchers have identified the core factors in a happy life. The primary components are number of friends, closeness of friends, closeness of family, and relat ionships with co-workers and neighbors. Togetherthese features explain about 70 percent of personal happiness. Murray and Peacock 1996Why does church make people so happy? Studies show ithas nothing to do with religion - its about the socializing. Its scheduled friend time.ViaThe Secrets of Happy Families Improve Your Mornings, Rethink Family Dinner, Fight Smarter, Go Out and Play, and Much MoreAfter examining studies of more than three thousand adults, Chaeyoon Lin and Robert Putnam found that what religion you practice or however close you feel to God makes no difference in your overall life satisfaction. What matters is the number of friends you have in your religious community. Ten is the magic number if you have that many, youll behappier. Religious people, in other words, are happier because they feel connected to a community of like-minded people. And if you have the cash, pay for dinner with a friend.Money definitely can make you happier - when you spend it on other people.V iaHappy Money The Science of Smarter SpendingBy the end of the day, individuals who spent money on others were measurably happier than those who spent money on themselves - even though there were no differences between the groups at the beginning of the day. And it turns out that the amount of money people found in their envelopes - $5 or $20 - had no effect on their happiness at the end of the day. How people spent the money mattered much more than how much of it they got.Harvard professor and author of Happy Money The Science of Smarter Spending,Michael Nortonexplains in his TED talk.Dont have the cashfor that? Those who perceived benefits in the event seven weeks after it happened- for example, believing that they had grown and matured as a result, or revalued home life, or resolved to create less hectic schedules for themselves- were less likely to have recurrences and more likely to be healthy eight years later. In contrast, those who blamed their heart attacks on other people or on their own emotions (e.g., having been too stressed) were now in poorer health. In many cases, Nietzsche was right what does not kill us can makeus stronger.ViaFlourish A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-beingA substantial number of people also show intense depression and anxiety after extrem e adversity, often to the level of PTSD, but then they grow. What Steve Jobs learned building fences that changed history
What Steve Jobs learned building fences that changed historyWhat Steve Jobs learned building fences that changed historyApple may have made radical changes to the way the world communicates, but we can also learn something from Steve Jobs life before the company.Walter Isaacson is currently the President and CEO of The Aspen Institute, a Tulane University history professor, former editor of TIME and former chairman and CEO of CNN. He wrotea biography on Jobs- at the moguls request before his death - which came out soon after he passed away in 2011, 60 Minutes reports. The book welches based on interviews with more than 100 sources, including Jobs himself. But one story really got to the heart of Jobs knack for the details as presented in 60 MinutesWhat Jobs learned about dedicationAfter Isaacson mentioned how abrasive Jobs could be with others while in pursuit of perfection, 60 Minutes reports that the author reportedly believes that much of it can be traced to the earliest years of his life. And to the fact that Jobs was born out of wedlock, given up by his birth parents, and adoption by a working-class couple from Mountain View, California.Isaacson then went on to tell the programthat Paul Jobs was a salt of the earth guy, who was a great mechanic. And he taught his son Steve how to make great things, and he once, they were building a fence, and he said, You gotta make the back of the fence - that nobody will see - just as good looking as the front of the fence. Even though nobody will see it, you will know, and that will show that youre dedicated to making something perfect. 60 Minutesthen reports that Jobs was aware of his adoption, but a featured audio interview with Isaacson for the biography (one of many in the video clip) reveals even more about the moguls outlook on life.Jobs thought that he was chosenIn the audio interview, Jobs tells Isaacson that as a kid, he told someone across the street from his home about his adoption, and she asked him if t his was because his birth parents werent interested in raising him. Jobs said he went running into the house, questioning his adoptive parents about it.His parents said, No, you dont understand. We specifically picked you out, according to Jobs.Isaacson then told 60 Minutes that Jobs said, From then on, I realized that I was not just abandoned, I was chosen. Goodbye, Tax Season. Hello, Celebration!
Goodbye, Tax Season. Hello, Celebration! Goodbye, Tax Season. Hello, Celebration! Congratulations! Your team made it through another tax season successfully - save for a few extra gray hairs and a touch of sleep deprivation. Now, itâs time to toss aside the calculators and spreadsheets (for a little while, anyway) and celebrate! Whatâs the best way to acknowledge your staff for a job well done? Here are three ways to give employee recognition for achievements this tax season and all year long: 1. Give some real beans to count One of the biggest misconceptions about accounting and finance professionals is that theyâre adding-machine-addicted geeks crunching numbers all day long in a back room. Thatâs far from accurate, of course. In fact, there are some surprising facts about the accounting profession that counter the stereotypes. No doubt, your team members will appreciate the inside joke if you present them with two types of âbeansâ as rewards for their efforts this tax season: a bonus or raise, accompanied by a pound of quality coffee or a gift card they can use at a local coffee shop. 2. Take them out to a ball game Or to the aquarium. Or somewhere. Just take them out of the office! For months, your accountants have been spending hours and hours at a desk squinting at their computer screens and checking, double-checking and triple-checking calculations. They are now in dire need of fresh air and a change of scenery. So, make it a priority to organize a field trip for them. One positive side effect for the business is that a well-planned employee outing or team-building exercises can help enhance camaraderie. But be sure to ask for your staffâs input in advance so you go somewhere and do something they will actually enjoy. Have a vote, make the arrangements, and blow that Popsicle stand (i.e., your office) for a while. 3. Let them have two kinds of time Two kinds of time? Time off and more time. While a team outing can be a great way to release some stress, your employees also will likely want time away from the office and their colleagues (and yes, their boss!). Give them a day off this month or next, or allow them to take a few extra vacation days later on. This will help them to rejuvenate and prepare for that time after tax season. Think longer term, too. Consider instituting flexible scheduling and telecommuting options your team can take advantage of all year-round to better maintain work-life balance. This can have a positive impact on retention: In The People Puzzle: Building and Retaining a Talented Accounting and Finance Team, a report from Robert Half and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), accounting and finance professionals cited âflexible work hoursâ as one of the top three nonmonetary contributors to job satisfaction. (For CPAs at small firms, it was #1.) DOWNLOAD THE PEOPLE PUZZLE Giving employees more control over their time can have an added benefit: It can help you be more productive in your position. Actions + words = impact One other post-tax season staff management tip: Offering a heartfelt thank you can go a long way toward making your workers feel valued. You may feel confident your staff members know you appreciate their hard work, but you should tell them anyway, so you can be sure. And if you have employees who went truly above and beyond to get things done right this tax season, extend that thank-you to some form of public kudos. Whether itâs in a department meeting or an article in the company newsletter, nothing compares to being singled out as the type of professional the business relies on for its success. However you choose to celebrate the end of tax season with your staff, be sure to make it both meaningful and fun. If you do, youâll give the dedicated professionals on your accounting and finance teams even more reason to be proud of their accomplishments and to love their jobs. Subscribe to the Robert Half newsletter for articles and resources to help you build and manage a winning accounting and finance team - all sent directly to your inbox.

10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers Part One
10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers Part One 10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers Part One 10 Ways GDPR Will Affect Engineers, Part 1 Change can be difficult, but sometimes necessary, especially if the impact has wide-ranging potential. Engineering companies are finding that out now as they scramble to comply with GDPR (General Data Protection Rule), a European Union regulation passed in May that gives users more control over their personal data, and how organizations use it. Under GDPR regulation, EU citizens have a right to know how their personal data is being used, and the right to be forgotten by asking companies to remove their personal data. Companies also need to seek user consent before collecting personal data to ensure their data wont be abused. 18th Annual Cybersecurity Symposium on the campus of U.N.C. Charlotte in October of 2017. Image: Womble Bond Dickinson GDPR impacts the engineering of products to varying degrees, mostly depending on how much personal data is collected by companies. The regulation especially affects medical-device makers, which cant operate without personal information like health readings. The impact is less on some manufacturing sectors, where historically personal data collected has been relatively limited mostly to employees and contacts at customers and suppliers. The regulation forces the reexamination of device design, how sensors collect data, and business operations, even if you have only one client in the EU. Safeguards need to be in place or companies risk a massive EU fine. Here are some ways GDPR will impact engineers. For You: IoT Puts New Spin on Old Product 1) Device Design Changes GDPR requirements are legal, but there are device design implications as the regulation digs into functional requirements of a system. The regulation requires data protection by default and design, which is a big consideration when engineering devices. Simply put, this requires developers to think about potential risks and harms their personal data driven system poses, and to embed technical and organizational safeguards in the technology, to protect the data subjects rights from the start, says Lachlan Urquhart, lecturer in technology law at the University of Edinburgh. 2) New Device Considerations The impact of GDPR can be significant depending on the information control and transport. Medical devices requiring cache personal information, such as name, age, and weight, within the data storage of the device itself, will need to be audited as changes to the software may be required. These may include new routines to remove the records when required by the new legislation, says John Turner, software engineering manager at medical device maker Starfish Medical. With the right software design, accounting for the control and limiting the flow of personal information into and out of medical devices, the new standards may have minor to no design impacts, Turner says. Starfish has work instructions to include the ability to remove patient history. Typically this is the opposite of current practice for most connected devices, Turner says. Patient history provides information that help diagnose and treat most diseases and medical conditions. 3) Privacy and Safety by Design Organizations need to consider the privacy implications of a project at the outset and build in compliant processes from the start. Privacy impact assessments also need to be carried out where required by law, says Caroline Churchill, a partner, and Orla OHannaidh, an associate, at transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson. The most significant challenge from our perspective, particularly for the manufacturing and construction industry, is the culture change that is likely to be needed, the lawyers state. Technologies, like sensors that are used to collect data, including personal information, for more efficient manufacturing operations, need to have privacy assessments at the forefront. The privacy by design requirements under the GDPR make it imperative that manufacturing, construction and healthcare industries integrate data protection measures from the beginning of the engineering process, and continue to maintain and develop such measures on an ongoing basis, according to the lawyers. 6 ways to treat your time like money (and reap the benefits)
6 ways to treat your time like money (and reap the benefits) 6 ways to treat your time like money (and reap the benefits) Time is money, the old saying goes, usually said with intent to spur one to action, or criticize a lazy day of binge-watching and self-care. But if we actually treated our time the way we treat our money - as a thing of great value that we trade for the sustaining and comforting things of life - we might find more value in those âunproductiveâ periods.Life goes by quickly - I canât believe weâre already entering into summer! - and unlike money, once itâs spent, we canât do anything to get more of it. But we can be thoughtful about how to manage what we have. Here are six ways we treat money, and lessons we can take for how to treat time as well!InvestIf weâre lucky, we have a retirement plan through work, and every year HR sends out an email reminding us of this important benefit, and how we should be investing in our future! Money gets taken from our checks and invested into accounts that, if all goes well, will one day pay our bills when we stop working â" at lea st in theory. The idea is that by giving up a little money now, weâll get much more back later when we need it. We can invest our time for future returns, too!Iâm reminded of one of my favorite quotes from Gretchen Rubin, âgo slow to go fast.â She recounts that when sheâs in a hurry and tries to rush to get things done, inevitably some mistake is made, or some accident happens, that will then cause greater delays and slow her down even more than she originally would have been. Instead, she says, âgo slow to go fast.â If youâre in a hurry, thatâs the time to take a breath and be extra deliberate. Slow down, make sure that youâre not rushing through and more liable to knock something over, miss a step, or forget something important. You may be a few minutes behind, but take care, so it wonât turn into an hour!Another good standard is the âtwo minuteâ rule. If anything needs to be done that will take two minutes or less, do it now! Those little tasks can pile up, and keeping track of everything that needs to be done can be a real drain on memory and concentration, which slows us down and takes attention (read: TIME!) away from the rest of our lives. Instead of letting little tasks pile up, just do it now, or for a bigger project youâve been procrastinating on, set a timer and just do it for two minutes!Investing a little time up front, saves us time in the long run.SaveSaving is like investing, but weâre usually not expecting to get more than what we put in. We set big goals for our money, whether itâs to buy a car, own a home, or go in a big vacation, and then try to put away a little at a time until we have enough!Ways to save time might include flex-time or 4/10s at work, combining errands, or even spending money to pay someone else to take some things off you plate. Many of us also have a bank of days, whether they are vacation days or PTO, that we accrue each year. Just as financial advice warns against âleaving money on the tableâ by not taking advantage of employer match programs for retirement accounts, you shouldnât leave that time on the table either! Taking vacation is good for you, good for your job, and good for your time management! Even if you canât take a long trip away, you can take one day here and there to rest, recharge, or just take care of those nagging tasks that are piling up!Save your time for a trip, a side project, or a special day, but make sure you do spend it!SpendMost of us have a monthly budget, and even if we arenât literally tracking every dollar, we have a pretty good idea of how much we have to spend in each category. The top categories are always our non-negotiable expenses, which will include some version of food, shelter, clothing, and transportation; everything else, including our precious smartphones, comes in secondary to meeting those basic needs for ourselves and our families.Obviously, for most of us, spending time at our jobs to pay for those necessities is non-negotiable. But you may have more room for negotiation than you think! Many organizations now offer some version of flex-time, or 4/10s, or you may be able to work from home one day (or more!) a week. Many Americans border on workaholism though, and those other essential priorities get lost.Build into your time budget the time to make delicious and healthy meals, and turn your house into a welcoming and comfortable home for yourself and your family. Take a day to make those doctorâs visits, bring old clothes to the donation center, and get the car tuned up (that isnât just my to-do list, right?).Recent research on spending money says that weâre generally happier if we spend on experiences rather than stuff, and when we spend on others rather than on ourselves. I would argue that the same is true of time! Boredom has been identified as a precursor for depression, and the human brain craves novelty on a regular basis. So spend your time doing new things, exploring new pla ces, and spend your time with the people who matter to you most. Always spend the time to go to recitals, games, graduations, weddings, and funerals. These are the big, important events of our lives, and it matters that the people who love us are there for them. And do spend time on yourself too! You spend 99-cents on an app or a piece of candy, a ringtone or to download a book. Youâll spend $5 on a latte or a lipstick or to stream a movie. Just because. Find the equivalent of a dollar in time, and treat yourself to those little moments. Just one minute of deep breathing, or two minutes of meditation, can restore calm and focus to a hectic day. Put your phone on speaker and call your mom or your best friend while you run errands. Listen to a favorite book or podcast during your commute.Track your time or look back over your calendar and see where you can budget for those essential âfixed expenses.â10% to charityMost religions have some version of the tithe, which is the require ment to give a certain percentage of your income to charity. Just as important, though, are your volunteer hours! Non-profit organizations can always use a helping hand, whether it is participating in a community event, staffing a fundraiser, serving on a committee, or directly working with those they serve. In most communities, a quick online search will lead you to at least one volunteer service opportunity on any given weekend. Itâs a great way to engage in new experience with your loved ones, too, if you bring the family along!Get out of debtAlmost all of us have some debt, whether itâs a credit card, student loans, a car payment, or mortgage. Itâs usually included in our non-negotiable budget items. We can owe time, too. When was the last time you called your mom, or your best friend? When was the last time you got a solid eight hours of sleep? Or got to workout? Or had a date night? Call a sitter, leave work early, cash in a vacation day. This is your life, make sure you âre living it!TaxesThat other old saying is that only two things are certain in life: death and taxes. If youâre able to, register to vote, find out where your polling place is, and go do your civic duty! The top five regrets of those at the end of life consistently have to do with how they spent their time, and we often have more choice and flexibility about how we spend this very precious resource than we realize. Treating time like money may not make us any less busy, but it may well guide us to making the more personally meaningful choices about where we spend it.Kiyomi Appleton Gaines writes about work, life, culture, and fairy tales. The unconventional way Steve Jobs boosted creativity before a meeting
The unconventional way Steve Jobs boosted creativity before a meeting The unconventional way Steve Jobs boosted creativity before a meeting Ladders is no stranger to looking to the past to glean helpful tips for the present.A young Elon Musk taught us to patten our risk with research, a young Bill Gates taught us to brandish variety as a tool against burnout, and a young Thomas Jefferson taught us the value of being polymathic. All conventional nuggets endorsed by objective success.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Sometimes wisdom is attended by less traditional methods. In fact, the late Steve Jobs was a famous patron of clairvoyance over practicality. Meditation, mindfulness and intuition, he believed fortified the kind of success only achieved by those that were truly great.Jobs and mindfulnessâThatâs when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before.â- Steve JobsBefore his renowned tech success, Jobs experimented with eastern practices in his youth, dropping out of Reed College in 1972 before traveling to India to imbibe the teachings of Zen Buddhism. Later in life, he evidenced many of the things he learned during that time while nurturing his corporation. His colleagues would often remark upon his bare-foot saunters. While brainstorming and before meetings the famous investor would walk around without any shoes, in an attempt to boost creativity and cognition- he was an avid jogger for this reason as well. The massive success Jobs acquired is enough to grant mindfulness a consideration but experts additionally ratify his process, especially as it relates to work productivity and satisfaction.CEO Magazine published a piece just this month categorizing all the ways moment to moment self-awareness serves better workflow. When employees are mindful, work culture thrives, with less mental fatigue, higher emotional intelligence and surges of productivity.A study conducted by a team of researchers in Singapore titled, A Mindfulness Intervention for Middle Manager Well-Being, propounds mindfulness as a way to spurn burnout. A mind beholden to the present is better suited to detach itself from toxic preoccupations. An actual, observed methodology separates Jobâs famed trust of âgut feelingsâ from the illusory. Intuition can sometimes be a more fruitful resource than the conscious mind. The kind of unexplainable decisions that galvanize revolutions are influenced by our inner voice. It defies conventional insight and correctly determines which risks are worth taking. On this matter, Jobs says, âThe people in the Indian countryside donât use their intellect like we do, they use their intuition instead, and their intuition is far more developed than in the rest of the world. Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion. Five Questions with Dean Kamen
Five Questions with Dean Kamen Five Questions with Dean Kamen Five Questions with Dean Kamen Photo by Sean Smith, NASA, and courtesy of E4C- Engineering for Change by Rob Goodier, Courtesy of Engineering for Change Dean Kamen has achieved a double coup in global development engineering: First, he invented a powerful water purifier that treats river water, saltwater and even mud or raw sewage. Second, he has found a powerful partner to manufacture and distribute it. Few towns in the world do not have a Coke for sale somewhere, and designers of solar lanterns, treadle pumps, clean-burning cookstoves and other products that can improve lives in developing communities dream of tapping into Coca Colas far-flung network. So, its fitting that Kamen, one of the titans of invention, should team up with the company. Kamen, popularly known as the inventor of the Segway, first gained notoriety in the medical field for his drug infusion pump AutoSyringe. He founded DEKA Research and Development Corporation to develop an eclectic variety of devices from prostheses to power generators. And he is now known to children and students worldwide as the founder of FIRST and the FIRST Robotics Competitions. Kamens purifier, the Slingshot, is a vapor compression distiller that produces 10 gallons of water per hour while running on only one kilowatt of electricity (please see the image below for details). We asked him five questions. ...I think it will be the people in emerging economies themselves who will be the ones to create the next generation of incredible technologies to help the developing world, - Dean Kamen E4C: What was the biggest technological hurdle to jump when you were developing the Slingshot? DK: For any new technology, the biggest hurdle isnt the engineering itself, its getting people to accept and use a new idea. Physics and chemistry are predictable; human behavior is not. We tried for a decade to find a partner with the vision and resources to help us bring Slingshot to those who need it most. It wasnt until we began working with Coca-Cola that we found the right organization in terms of their ability to deliver products to remote places in the developing world. E4C: What impact could the Slingshot have? (First the realistic answer, then the wildly optimistic answer.) DK: Last year, we brought several of our machines to Ghana for trials and placed them in schools. Within a few months, the teachers were reporting that their students were happier and healthier, so we already know what sort of impact our device can have on a small scale. Optimistically, if this machine is deployed throughout the world, it has the potential to bring clean drinking water to the two billion people on this planet who lack it. E4C: What else are you working on that could improve lives in developed countries? DK: In addition to the Slingshot, my engineers at DEKA have been working on improvements to the Stirling generator, an external-combustion engine that can produce electricity from virtually any liquid or gaseous fuel. These small generators could do amazing things in the developing world where people dont have access to electricity. But even in the developed world, where infrastructures are growing old and unreliable and point-of-use power generation is becoming more appealing, the Stirling generator could have a great impact as well. Dean Kamen poses with the latest generation of his water purifier. This version has shrunken in size. Its forebears were about as large as a refrigerator. Photo courtesy of Dean Kamen E4C: People dont often associate robotics with developing countries, but FIRST Robotics Competitions have seen teams from countries such as Brazil and Mexico. So, what are your plans for FIRST in emerging economies? DK: My hope has always been that someday FIRST is available to every student on this planet with a desire to explore the possibilities of math and science. A country that possesses a smart and talented technological workforce has the best shot at creating a sustainable economy. FIRST has a proven record of encouraging kids to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology. We will continue to grow FIRST not only in the United States, but also in emerging economies throughout the world. I have no doubt that in the years ahead FIRST will continue to grow in Latin America and Africa. E4C: After FIRST and the Slingshot, what new plans do you have in mind for problem solving in emerging economies? DK: If we are successful in our efforts to increase global access to water (and the accompanying health benefits), electricity (and the accompanying access to technology and communication), and FIRST (as a tool to both inspire students and give them the skills to succeed in technological fields), then I think it will be the people in emerging economies themselves who will be the ones to create the next generation of incredible technologies to help the developing world. E4C:And a sixth question because we couldnt resist: What advice do you have for inventors working on solutions to problems in developing countries? DK: The unique situation with respect to innovation in and for the developing world is that the inventions need to be particularly sophisticated without being complex, because access to the infrastructure needed to acquire and maintain fragile, complicated systems will not be readily available. Simple, robust solutions that are simple to deploy and simple to maintain are particularly valuable in those environments. View larger version, or see the original at coca-colacompany.com (pdf)
